Internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer, Tanya Diamond, and concert guitarist and Stellenbosch Konservatorium lecturer, Nina Fourie-Gouws, combine artistic forces in LA FEMME! This visually and auditory captivating production combines the passion, fire and intensity of contemporary solo Flamenco dance with the rich, complex and sensuous sounds of classical guitar. Tanya and Nina embrace the rich Spanish tradition of music and dance while exploring new sonic possibilities of contemporary classical repertoire. Traditional Spanish accompaniment, including castanetscajon and palmas, will be provided by members of the SoloFLAMENCO dance studio. Artists’ biographies below

 

NINA FOURIE-GOUWS

Nina Fourie-Gouws completed both her Bachelor and Masters in Music Performance degrees at the University of Pretoria and also received a Licentiate in Classical Guitar Teaching from the University of South Africa. In 2012 Fourie-Gouws obtained her Postgraduate in Music Performance with distinction from the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town. She is the first guitarist to receive these honours cum laude.

Fourie-Gouws has received masterclasses from a large number of international concert guitarists and pedagogues, including Carlos Bonell (Royal College of Music in London), Nikita Koshkin (Russia), Marco Tamayo (Cuba), Štěpán Rak (Czech Republic), Victor Villadangos (Argentina), Goran Krivokapic (Montenegro), Antigoni Goni (Greece) and Carlos Barbosa-Lima (Brazil), to name a few.

Nina maintains an active concert schedule throughout Southern Africa and in 2018 she performed as a featured solo artist at the Volterra Guitar Project in Tuscany, Italy. Nina has also performed as a guest artist on the South African television show, Kyknet’s Draadloos. Fourie-Gouws is hailed as one of South Africa’s “brightest young guitar stars” with an “effervescent quality that captivates her audiences.” Since 2013 Nina Fourie-Gouws has been guitar lecturer at Stellenbosch Konservatorium where she teaches pre-undergraduate and undergraduate practical music studies, accompaniment, repertoire studies and teaching methodology.

Internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer Tanya Diamond started her professional dance career at the age of 15 after being spotted by the internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer Antonio del Castillo.  She studied flamenco and Classical Spanish dancing in Spain where she completely integrated with the Spanish culture becoming completely fluent in Spanish.

Tanya expanded  her dancing career to became an actress for the Spanish TV channel Antenna- 3 in ‘Farmacia de Guardia’ and ‘Humor 5 Estrellas’ on Tele 5 and playing one of the leading roles in the Spanish box office hit ‘El Robobo de la Jojoya’ with actors Martes y Trece. She also took time to study screenwriting in Los Angeles, California

Tanya Diamond toured the USA with the Jose Greco Dance Company and has taught Flamenco in New York and Los Angeles. Tanya has produced and starred in Agony & Ecstasy, Gitano, Misa Flamenca, España ’99, Peña Flamenca and Percussion. Diamond has also produced the movie ‘Bailando la Palabra’ and ‘Boda Zulu’ for the Spanish production company Larpos. Additionally, Tanya has coordinated live concerts, art exhibitions and movie festivals for Spanish-speaking embassies in South Africa.

In 1996 she returned to South Africa and established SoloFLAMENCO, a professional dance studio that offers classes, corporate entertainment for companies like Old Mutual, VW Barons, Caledon Casino and Spa, Citadel, and UCT Business School and entertains audiences at venues like The Masque Theatre, Alliance Francaise and The Nassau Theatre.
